History of the Truffle

- About the most prestigious mushroom, the Truffle, some writers go back in

past up to Jacob’s time (- 1600 J.C) when for the first time, the Truffle has been
mentioned in a book. But these historical sources have not been approved by
everyone.
- In our Region of France, truffles fields have always been a priority until the end of
last century. Indeed, in 1882, 20 Tons of fresh truffles were sold in Richelieu’s
Market.
- This tradition will last until 1920, when the production started to drop.
The First World War was responsible for the death of so many people in rural areas
that the survivors were forced to neglect truffles to undertake more urgent work.
- In 1940 the national production had already fallen from 2000 to 400 tons.
- The after World War 2  boom caused an exodus from the country side and the
eageing the rural population neglected the truffle fileds.
- The lowest production was reached in the 1960's.
